Who we are

"He who opens a school door, closes a prison." ~ Victor Hugo

iGen Education Trust is a non-profit organisation whose primary objective is to make higher education in South Africa accessible and equitable for every qualifying student. This will ensure that quality education becomes a reality for ALL university students in South Africa regardless of race, gender, social status, economic background, religion or political affiliation.

Our desire is to give each student an equal chance to realize their full potential in life and contribute towards an improved quality of life for themselves and their families. In the long term, we see ourselves influencing the design and delivery of education in South Africa. We believe high quality, purpose-driven education can transform students into citizens who are able to contribute meaningfully in the provision of solutions needed to address social, political and economic challenges societies face today.

We believe

  • In the power of education to catalyse social and economic change.

  • Quality tertiary education is vital to sustaining our democracy and can strengthen South Africa.

  • By enabling equitable education, we can close the gaps that separate students on the basis of affordability.

Our promise

  • We promise to not compromise on integrity, excellence and who we are.

  • We promise to be truthful in the manner in which we conduct ourselves and deliver on our mandate.

  • We promise to endeavour to serve every South African child who deserves to be at a tertiary institution and needs funding, irrespective of cultural background.

Board of Trustees

iGen Education Trust is committed to good governance which will promote the organisation’s vision, strengthen the Board of Trustees (The Board) and management accountability and build public trust. The primary role and responsibility of The Board is to retain full, efficient and effective control of The Trust, and serve as a decision-making hub and custodian of corporate governance in the organisation. It will also act in the best interest of the Trust and its Stakeholders at all times and serve as the Trust guardian of values and ethics.

The Board is responsible for strategic direction, policy, boundaries and oversight; monitoring performance and ensuring sound financial management. The Trust’s governance framework supports the principles of integrity, strong ethical values (responsibility, accountability, fairness and transparency), diversity and excellence.

The Board and management recognise and acknowledge that iGen Education Trust is a registered Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) and is therefore accountable to donors and stakeholders. As a result, The Board will ensure that The Trust is annually audited and appropriate financial statements are prepared (in line with the requirements of the NPO Act) to the standards of generally accepted accounting practice.

Support iGen

By harnessing the immense power of collective giving, iGen enables students to receive tertiary education so they are equipped appropriately to tackle poverty, unemployment and inequality.

Why should I donate?

Your donation goes towards funding students in financial need, making sure South African tertiary education is accessible and equitable to all students. Almost all universities in South Africa are battling with high student debt and do not have adequate funds to maximise the impact of their offerings. By March 2019, students were owing different universities over R9 billion and we hope to assist in reducing this gap, and in eliminating it.

By donating at least R100 every month to iGen Education Trust, you can impact not just students but families and generations

Where will my money go?

All the funds collected go to iGen Education Trust. Eighty percent (80%) goes directly to student fees and one percent (1%) covers operational costs. The rest, nineteen percent (19%), is used for comprehensive marketing to drive fund growth.

Incentive Program

There is an opportunity to participate in an incentive program offered by our service provider, Expansior (Pty) Ltd. This is an amazingly beneficial opportunity which enables individual donors to generate revenue by mobilising others to support iGen. To learn more about the incentive program, please click here

How do I donate?

iGen recognises that different people prefer to donate in different ways, with each person having their own motivation for giving. For this reason, there are three different options through which you may make a donation, as indicated below:

Option 1 - Once-off or unscheduled donors

A single or once-off donation of any amount can be made at any time. As a once-off or unscheduled donor, you cannot participate in the incentive programme. However, your donation will be recognised and an appropriate Section 18A certificate will be sent to you, on request. If you prefer to make a once-off or unscheduled donation, please click here

Option 2 - Monthly donors (non-incentivised)

Monthly donations of any amount can be made at any time. As a monthly donor, you choose this option if you prefer to donate monthly but have no interest in participating in the incentive programme. You can choose to make your donation via debit order or by electronic funds transfer. Either way, your donation will be recognised and an appropriate Section 18A certificate will be issued to you, on request. If you prefer to make a monthly donation without participating in the incentive programme, please click here

Option 3 - Monthly donors (incentivised)

If you prefer to make monthly donations and participate in the Expansior incentive program, this option is applicable to you. This option enables you to be incentivised for encouraging others to support iGen. Monthly debit orders are mandatory for you to donate through this option.

If you prefer to contribute monthly and also participate in the incentive programme, please click here
